Ferrry contract worth millions signed by Cammell Laird
The Birkenhead ship building yard, Cammell Laird signed a contract worth millions of pounds on Monday 11th June to build two new passenger ferries.
The contract was presented by Western Ferries to Cammell Laird after their success in the bidding process. The project will consist of building two ferries for the route that links the West Coast of Scotland to the Central Belt via Gourock to Dunoon.
The work is set to begin within the next few months and will be completed by August 2013, where the vessels will be delivered to Firth Clyde ready for the Cowal Games Weekend in Dunoon.
Cammel Laird claims to be one of the best ship building yards in Europe working on ship repairs, refits, conversion and boasts contracts with the military marine sectors such as the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier. Cammell Laird’s chief executive spoke to the Wirral Globe and stated, ‘This deal will again showcase our world class workforce and facilities which includes one of the largest modular construction halls in Europe.’
Gordon Ross, the managing director of Western Ferries listed the reasons why Cammell Laird was the preferred bidder and included in his answer the industry experts Cammell Laird possess and the quality of their facilities as well as the cost factors, ‘With such an attractive and competitive bid and with its heritage of maritime excellence, we ultimately trusted Cammell Laird to deliver the highest quality of build, on time and to budget.’ Mr Ross also stated how he was very proud the companies new ferries will be fully built in the UK and will carry the Cammell Laird numbers 1387 and 1388.
The two ferries that Cammell Laird will build are designed to be larger than the ferries currently used as well as faster and more fuel efficient. They are expected to hold 20% more passengers and the increased speed will result in Western Ferries being able to deliver a further 50% capacity.
