Forget the snow boots! I do hope Santa has his rain coat on this Christmas!
The UK has experienced the wettest summer for 100 years and the forecast doesn't seem to be changing any time soon. We may be in for the wettest Christmas on record after the Environment Agency issued yet more flood warnings for the coming days and the wet weather doesn’t seem to want to take a break for Christmas either!
The forecast is for continuous heavy rain over the weekend making the conditions difficult for those last minute Christmas shoppers. Driving conditions will also be treacherous, especially when a predicted 18 million vehicles are expected to be on Britain’s roads at peak times over the next few days.
There is a series of bands coming in from the Atlantic, sweeping across the country and the Environment Agency have issued flood warnings to many parts of the UK with the three most severe warnings issued in the South West of England and the Anglian region. Other flood warnings are in force over the South of the region, South East Wales and the Midlands only weeks after the UK was severely hit by the previous bad weather which caused flood water to surge through many streets and roads, cutting off whole villages and forcing hundreds to leave their homes.
Santa and his trusty reindeers haven’t just got the rain to contend with, there is going to be gale force winds over the weekend which could continue into Christmas Eve. However, the good news is that the Environment Agency said that the need for a hosepipe ban for the next 18 months is ‘extremely low’ even in drought ‘stress’ areas. This is good news for the South East which is a drought risk area where 14 million customers are served by Thames Water.
So while the children are tucked up, cosy and warm in bed, you're downstairs eyeballing the sherry and mince pie sat on the table, spare a thought for Santa, out in the rain, hail, wind, sleet, snow and ice, delivering presents to all the children of the world.(0) Comments
