Number of parents moving to their desired school catchment area is rising
A study from Santander investigated lengths parents are willing to go to, to be within the catchment area for the desired school for their child.
As the competition for places at the UK’s best schools continues to get steeper, the bank investigated just more than 4,500 people. The study highlighted that families are prepared to shell out more than £32,000 to be closer to their preferred school. This is substantially higher than the UK average salary at £27,195.
Although moving house wasn’t the limit to how far parents will go to get their children into desirable schools. The study showed that 31% of families who moved had to change jobs as a result of the decision. Thirty one percent also admitted to having to move to an area tget didn’t even like and 25% of families involved in the study said they had been forced into downsizing from their original property.
Further sacrifices made by parents included paying more for a property than they could realistically afford and others stated that they could realistically afford and others stated that they had moved further away from family and friends than they would have like to.
This has shown itself to only be a temporary measure however as 45% said they had or would move away from the area again as soon as they had secured their child a place in the sought after school. Thirty percent also said they would move back again after their child had finished at the school.
Overall younger parents were more likely to buy or rent a property to be within a necessary catchment area ( 46% of 18-34 year olds) compared with just 18% of 35 to 54 year olds.
