Prepare to wave goodbye to Liverpools World Heritage Site status

Peel Holdings submitted a huge planning application to develop Liverpool’s docklands and waterfront. Liverpool City Council approved the application named Liverpool Waters in March and the papers are being prepared to be sent to the Secretary of State who will decide the future of the project.
However, due to the scale of the £5.5 billion project by Peel Holdings, the World Heritage Site status could be lost. The development would include new offices, restaurants, hotels and sky scrapers built near the historic Three Graces.
UNESCO will hold a meeting in Russia next week to decide Liverpool’s fate. The city could see itself being placed on the ‘in danger’ list or even completely deleted from the World Heritage List.
UNESCO inspectors visited Liverpool’s waterfront in January where the development work will take place if given the go ahead by the Government. They stated that the Three Graces would play ‘second violin’ to the colossal scheme proposed by Peel Holdings.
Liverpool City Council angrily dismissed the possibility of being added to the ‘in danger’ list and a spokesman stated to the Echo, ‘We are disappointed with this recommendation. It appears to be premature as the planning approval for Liverpool Waters has still got to be finally determined.’ He continued by announcing that Liverpool Waters will not be completed for several years and so the conclusion by UNESCO can not be decided until the project is in its final stages and plans may have been adapted by then.
The council spokeman is also confident that no heritage will be lost because of the waterfront development, ‘We believe firmly that it is possible to have a world-class development while still retaining our world heritage status.’
