Voting for Liverpools first elected Mayor started today & other Liverpool news
The historic poll for Liverpool’s first elected Mayor started today at 7am and will close at 10pm tonight. The elected mayor will be the most powerful directly elected politician outside of London in England.
The campaign that Liverpool Council started after voting went ahead in February to erase the role of a Council Leader for a Mayor. The clever move will unlock £130 million from the Government for Liverpool under the city deal.
There was a small amount of controversy due to the Council's decision not to hold a referendum which other cities did, but the Labour Leader candidate and Liverpool Council Leader Joe Anderson backed the choice.
There are 12 candidates running for Mayor, all of which are men with Joe Anderson being the favourite. Close competition comes from Liberal Democrat Richard Kemp and Green candidate John Coyne making the elections a close call.
The Labour Party is also hoping to gain control of Wirral Council and Sefton Council in the Council elections but only the votes for the new Liverpool Mayor will be counted tonight.
In other local news, Liverpool is the 5th most popular tourist destination in the UK, according to official tourism figures behind London in 1st place, Edinburgh in 2nd, 3rd is Manchester and 4th is Birmingham.
The Museum of Liverpool has reached its one millionth visitor since it was opened in July 2011, although the museum was officially opened by The Queen in December 2011. In the museum's opening week, it attracted 77,667 people, which remains the museum’s busiest period. Last month, almost 60,000 people visited the museum during the two week Easter school holiday and over 22,000 people visited during the Giant Spectacular Sea Odyssey event.
Do you think that the Mayor of Liverpool will make a difference to the city especially with the money from the Government? What are your thoughts on Liverpool becoming the 5th most popular UK tourist destination for 2012 and the Liverpool Museum already reaching its 1 million visitor?(2) Comments
