Commercial EPC

Energy Performance Certificates are reports produced for buildings, showing their energy ratings. The documents have a graph on the front page which is similar to those found on domestic appliances such as fridges, showing the energy rating of the property. The report also contains recommendations of how the energy efficiency can be improved.

EPCs can only be carried out by qualified Energy Assessors. Domestic Energy Assessors or DEAs have been providing residential EPCs since 2007, however since January 2009 all non domestic properties being built, marketed for sale or rent require an Energy Performance Certificate. This also applies to commercial premises which were already on the market at the start of January 2009. Non Domestic Energy Performance Certificates can only be carried out by qualified Non Domestic Energy Assessors or NDEAs.

As commercial properties account for nearly 25% of the UK’s carbon emissions, which contributes to global climate change, even small improvements to the energy usage of buildings could have a significant effect on carbon emissions. In addition to that, it is possible that substantial savings can be made on fuel bills by implementing the recommendations on the report.
