Councils are paying landlords thousands to take on tenants!
According to a report by Hilary Osbourne upon information from the charity Shelter, councils in the South of the country are having to pay private landlords up to £4,000 of taxpayer’s money to take homeless families due to their own lack of social housing.
The Guardian newspaper has stated that some councils in London and the South East of England are advertising for private landlords to accept cash in return for housing for families who desperately need it but can’t afford to pay for privately rented accommodation themselves.
Some examples of the councils are Tower Hamlets and Westminster who are offering £2,500 and £4,000 payments to landlords who will rent their accommodation to council tenants. Other councils of the London area that are offering one off payments to take on tenants are Barnet and Southwark.
However, it isn’t all bad news if you do have to rent from a private landlord, in fact, there are many benefits of renting privately. For example, you may be able to achieve a cheaper rent if done privately compared to renting through a letting agent. This is because a letting agent will charge for the cost of finding you as a tenant and they often pass the charge to you.
You are also often able to move in quickly when renting privately compared to when renting social accommodation or renting through a letting agent. This is thanks to fewer administration tasks and it is also in the private landlords best interests to have a tenant moved in and settled so they can begin to receive rent.
Private landlords can also offer flexible tenancy lengths as they would prefer to have longer tenancies compared to the usual 6 or 12 months. What are your experiences with renting from private landlords?
