Liverpool Cruise Terminal may lose European grant
Liverpool’s Cruise Terminal received £8.8 million from the Government’s Department of Transport to build a permanent cruise terminal at Pier Head and a further £8.6 million from the European Regional Development Fund. However, it has been discovered that the conditions of the European grant may not have been complied with and if this is the case, Liverpool will have to pay the money back.
Liverpool City Council have already had to give back The Department of Transport’s grant of £8.8 million as it breached the rules on State Aid. This is because the State Aid rules mean that grants can not be used to help a private business benefit over its rivals. Liverpool’s Cruise Terminal is operated by Peel Holdings, the company who designed the Liverpool Waters project.
There have been complaints submitted by rival cruise operators in the North East and Southampton because they claim the money was unlawfully granted and they will loose business because of it. However, the Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson spoke to the Echo about this statement, ‘Southampton had received millions of pounds in state aid and it is rather hypocritical of them to question the turnaround cruises.’
Mayor Joe Anderson remains positive that the issue will be resolved shortly.
In related news, Liverpool City Council could receive a £10 million grant from the Government to tackle the City’s poor recycling and rubbish collections. It is claimed that the council are failing to make fortnightly bin collections in many areas of the city.
Liverpool City has the worse recycling record of any major city, sending an estimated 83% of household rubbish to landfill. Liverpool City Council hopes to introduce weekly bin collections to help boost the rate of recycling if the Government funding is granted. The council are also considering introducing food waste collections which would lower the amount of rubbish going to landfill.
The best council for recycling in the country is Sheffield which recycles 22% of its waste. Do you think a grant from the government will kick start a major overhaul of the poor rubbish collection service?(0) Comments
