Plans revealed for a new toll road in Cambridgeshire
If the plans for a new toll road in Cambridgeshire get the go ahead, this will be the first toll road to be built in the UK for a decade since the M6 Toll between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. The 27 mile stretch of road cost £1.5 billion has improved the flow of traffic on the heavily congested M6 which is what the Highways Agency would like to implement on the A14 in Cambridgeshire.
According to the Highways Agency it would be ‘fair that road users should make a direct contribution towards the cost of improvement’ and the ‘toll revenue is an essential component in the business case for this road scheme.’ It is thought that the project will cost £1.6 billion and work could begin in 2016 if the scheme gets the go ahead and work could last four years.
The aim of the toll road would be to stop congestion around Cambridge and Huntingdon. The new road would run between Ellington and Swavesey and would be open 7 days a week between 6am and 10pm. It is hoped that there will be no toll plazas as vehicles would be charged using automatic number plate recognition cameras, similar to those used in London which collect the congestion charge.
There will be a consultation open to the public on the best way to collect the tolls but the principle of tolling will not be open for discussion. The expected toll charge would be between £1 to £1.50.
In other traffic scheme news, there are calls for the road scheme planned for Chichester to be scrapped. The scheme involves introducing double yellow lines on city streets as well as the surrounding roads of North East Chichester.
After the consultation a letter was received to support the project and to object to the project then a new county councillor was elected. He believes that the area was relatively safe therefore there was currently little support for the scheme. There has been no final decision made as of yet but officers are recommending the plans are withdrawn.
