Record breaking amount of power generated from UK wind farms
On Friday the 14th September 2012, the UK’s wind farms generated a record breaking amount of power. The UK’s wind turbines previous record of 3.8GW recorded last May was shattered on Friday when a massive 4GW of energy was pumped to the National Grid. This is enough to light and heat more then 3 million British homes and that record is set to be broken again with news of plans being submitted for the worlds largest offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland.
This colossal wind farm would cost an estimated £4.5 billion and would have 339 wind turbines covering a massive 300 square kilometres off Caithness. This would make it double the size of the enormous London Array scheme off Kent’s coast.
The wind farm will give out a massive 1.5GW which is expected to power 40% of Scottish households. The scheme has been developed by Moray Offshore Renewable, a joint adventure between Repsol, a Spanish oil company and EDP, a Portuguese power group which has recently become partly owned by Three Gorges Corporation owned by China’s state.
The wind turbines will stand 200 meters tall which has caused American billionaire Donald Trump to complain because he states it will spoil the view from his new golf course. However, if the plans are given the go ahead, the wind turbines will be located more than 12 miles from the shore to take advantage of the high winds in the outer Moray Firth. If the scheme is granted permission, it is thought that this wind farm will be the first of a series of deep water schemes under the ‘Round 3’ licensing.
