The route for Wirral electricity cable revealed
A detailed map of the electricity cable set to run through the length of the Wirral has been released.
The 33km long electricity cable will come ashore near Leasowe Lighthouse and run underground through Meols, Heswall and Neston until it switches direction and continues between Burton and Puddington, heading towards Deeside where it will connect to the National Grid’s transmission system.
The work is set to start later this year and will consist of a channels dug deep underground where the cable will be laid and then filled in and covered over with topsoil. The cable’s route has been designed to be dug through agricultural land and cause minimal damage to sensitive areas such as woodland and Sites of Special Scientific Interest as well as areas of Special Protection.
The project is set to finish in 2015 and the electricity will provide renewable energy for many houses in England and Wales. The aim of the electricity cable is to help meet the UK’s carbon emission target. By transferring electricity from wind farms in Scotland to Wales.
Public exhibitions were held in Neston and Moreton to explain the plans to local residents and the feedback obtained helped to alter the initial plan. More information will be revealed in public information events as the work gets under way, according to Peter Roper, the project manager for the scheme.
The National Grid has teamed up with SP Transmission and selected Siemens/Prysmian as the contractor.

Do you believe the two public exhibitions that were held were sufficient to assure local residents that the high voltage cable will be safe running along the length of the Wirral? Do you believe that the cable is a great idea to provide England and Wales with renewable energy or do you think the direct effects on the environment will cause more damage that its worth?(0) Comments
