Shop flats can be created without planning permission
Eric Pickles has announced new planning rights which will mean flats can be created above shops without planning permission. The Communities Secretary has stated that two flats can be built above an office or storage space under the new permitted development rights which are designed to increase the number of homes in town centres to boost regeneration.
It is hoped that changing the rights will make it easier and quicker for people to create new homes above existing underused space. It is also hoped that the increased population in town centres will help improve the footfall on high streets, helping the country out of the recession.
The latest change is designed to streamline the planning system to cut any 'unnecessary bureaucracy' according to the Greg Clark, the Planning Minister. The Government has also declared their latest proposals to allow the temporary re-use of buildings without the need of planning permission which is designed to streamline the paper work needed for planning applications and to also speed up the decisions on planning appeals.
