Split decision over Liverpools Project Jennifer
A public enquiry has taken place to decide the fate of Liverpool’s Project Jennifer, a £150 million regeneration scheme for Everton. If the regeneration scheme gets the go ahead, the area around Everton’s Great Homer Street would be developed and consist of a supermarket, commercial units, a new school, a health centre and all important housing.
The plans for Liverpool’s Project Jennifer first began in 2007 but due to the economic downturn, slow progress has been made. If the regeneration scheme gets the green light, its estimated that 740 new jobs would be available however, the public enquiry gave some residents chance to air their concerns about Project Jennifer.
A local florist owner believes the supermarket will only provide part time jobs therefore cause a loss of around 1,000 jobs in the local community. The public enquiry was also held yesterday to decide whether to grant Liverpool City Council the power to buy up land around Everton for the regeneration scheme.
The hearing took place at the Adelphi Hotel yesterday where council chiefs claimed that the development was essential for North Liverpool and will help to overcome the high levels of unemployment, which has recently risen to 40% and deprivation in the area.
The company behind Project Jennifer is St Modwen who have a financial agreement with Liverpool City Council that they claim will greatly benefit the city however, objectors disagree, ‘They should not be giving prime pieces of land away. They are robbing the people of Liverpool,’ a local business owner commented.
There were a total of 39 objections to the compulsory purchase orders that were delivered by the council but a representative of Liverpool City Council stated that, ‘there was a compelling case in the public interest to confirm the CPOs.’
The enquiry has been postponed until the 4th July.
