White cliffs of Dover for sale with a 1.2 million pound price tag
The National Trust managers almost 5 miles of the White Cliffs of Dover, located in Kent but wish to purchase a piece of the cliff's land that's for sale by a private land owner. If the Nation Trust raise enough money to purchase this land it would link the National Trust visitors centre and the South Foreland lighthouse however, there is just one thing stopping them from mapping out their desired walkway across the land, the price tag.
The strip of land has a hefty price of £1.2 million and the Nation Trust is looking to raise the money to buy the land before developers do and build on one of the UK’s most famous landscapes.
The land for sale looks over the port and is made of rare chalk grassland. It is a very important habitat to preserve because of the flora and fauna living there including the rare Sea Carrot and Oxtongue Broomrape along with the Adonis Blue Butterfly and birds such as the Kittiwake, Skylark and the Peregrine Falcon. All of this extraordinary habitat would be lost if developers bought the land.
The National Trust bought their first stretch of the White Cliffs of Dover in 1968 and also maintains more than 720 miles of coastline stretching around England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The money to buy the piece of treasured cliff needs to be raised by the end of the year.
The director general of the National Trust, Fiona Reynolds spoke to the Guardian and said, ‘The appeal was the trust's biggest ever for a coastal site.’
