Comments : Labours plan to tackle rogue landlords, perhaps they should start with this one?
The Labour party leader Ed Miliband has set out plans to protect tenants living in the 3.6 million rented households from rogue landlords. Miliband proposed a national register of landlords and more powers given to councils to tackle the problems occurring with private landlords. He also wants to banish the confusing system of fees which are charged by landlords and replace it with a clearer system to save tenants being over charged.
There are more people living in privately rented accommodation than in social rented accommodation for the first time in 50 years and the Labour leader warned that if action isn’t taken, damaging social division may occur between homeowners and renters.
Perhaps an example of a landlord that Ed Milibands plans are aimed to eliminate can be found in London. If you wish to rent a room in this mans property, he has a list of 30 rules that must be followed, or face eviction and fines.
These rules ranged from not using the shower for more than 15 minutes to receiving a fine of £100 if you use additional heaters in your room. Other absurd rules that were printed on A4 paper that was given to a potential tenants as they viewed the property included a time limit of 30 minutes when cooking, overnight visitors must have been approved at least two weeks in advance of their visit and a £15 fine will be issued if dishes are left in the sink.
However, taking the top spot at number one in the list therefore obviously the most important to the landlord, in these exact words was, ‘No Pork EVER IN THE HOUSE or fridge’. Each to their own I guess… and the landlord finished the double sided list of rules by saying, ‘HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR READ AND ENJOY YOUR STAY – RULES ARE HERE FOR A REASON SO EVERYONE LIVES WITHOUT PROBLEMS.'
The list of 30 rules went viral when Miss Evelyn uploaded an image of the list to her Twitter account after visiting the property. She posted it with the hash tag #heseemedsonormal and it was then retweeted over 1,000 times.
Have you ever had a bad experience with a landlord that had too many unfair rules? What do you think of Ed Miliband’s proposals to tackle rogue landlords?
