Comments : Multi-million pound Widnes warehouse development moves a step closer
Development of a Widnes warehouse has taken a step towards becoming a reality as the clean-up of the land approaches completion.
A spokeswoman for Halton Council said that for several weeks ‘extensive remediation’ has been taking place on a brownfield site at Ditton Park. She also said that the work is due to be completed this summer and the first of the three industrial units are to begin construction by the end of the year.
Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Robert Hough was invited alongside Council Leader Rob Polhill to view the progress themselves.
Halton Council granted Commercial property developer Stoford and landowner Ainscough Strategic Land with outline planning permission to build three warehouse and industrial units. They are to proposed to be built near junction 6 of the M62.
The three industrial units are to be constructed on an allotted employment site within the council’s rail freight distribution park. The site is also known as 3MG and the three units should cover 452,500sq ft.
Councillor Rob Polhill said “The council is delighted by the investment Ainscough Land and Stoford have made in Halton and by their commitment to the project. Their plans for the site are an important addition to 3MG and Halton as a whole, providing high quality buildings and the potential to generate hundreds of jobs.”
The spokeswoman for Halton Council added that 3MG is expected to be one of the largest inter-modal logistics parks in the UK and will offer supreme access to the UK’s deep-sea ports.
During the development, the procedure of reclaiming around 120 acres of contaminated land and as well as being part of the SuperPort scheme, the project is expected to generate up to 5,000 new jobs.
Mr Hough said: “Developments such as this are central to our Superport strategy and will help the City Region secure its position as an innovative, global multimodal logistics hub, that will ultimately create opportunities for investors, developers, occupiers and others active in the global industrial and logistics property market.”
Rachael Ainscough, director of Ainscough Strategic Land said: “We were delighted to welcome Robert Hough and Councillor Rob Polhill to the site so that they could see first-hand how much progress has been made. Remediation and site preparation work, undertaken by Ainscough, has been extensive on what has been a challenging site but we are almost there now and work should be complete by late summer.”
She also added that company is working very closely with the Environment Agency to guarantee the remediation is ‘undertaken to the highest standard’.
Stoford’s joint managing director, Dan Gallagher said: “We are looking forward to getting on site later this year to start the construction of the industrial and warehouse units which we believe will appeal strongly to companies operating in various sectors, including suppliers working alongside Jaguar Land Rover.”
