Comments : Plans for a designated drinking zone in Liverpool unveiled
Liverpool City Council has revealed plans to designate an unused plot of land on Renshaw Street to drinkers in the hope to keep them off the streets. However, there has been strong opposition from the businesses on Renshaw Street who only found out about the plans from a conversation overheard on a bus.
The proposed piece of land to become a ‘wet facility’ is located on the corner of Reshaw Street and Leece Street next to Zorbas Greek restaurant. A marquee will be constructed and open to drinkers between 10am and 8pm, prime time for drinkers to be trawling the streets according to Liverpool City Council.
Alcohol abuse professionals will be based at the plot of land offering help to those who choose to reside there. Liverpool City Council has stated that a trial run will take place on every Thursday for a month starting in September. A spokesman for the council assured the cautious that many cities have tried this method with a lot of success.
In other Liverpool news, the proposals to revitalize vacant homes in the area of Toxteth including Ringo Starr’s childhood home have been revealed. The homes on Welsh Street, Kelvin Grove and Madryn were destined for demolition until the Government announced the £14 million Empty Homes Funding which is being used to refurbish a total of 32 homes. 280 of the properties in the area still face demolition but 150 new affordable homes will be built where the abandoned houses once stood.
The new and renovated houses will be available to buy or to rent and the final planning application will be drawn up by the end of September following a consultation process with local residents.
This scheme is part of a wider 10 year programme where around 80% of the houses in the designated areas will be retained and renovated out of 2,500 properties.
