In the winter months your boiler works ten times harder than any other time of year because you spend more time indoors sheltering from the wet, windy cold weather outside. Therefore, it is very important that your boiler works at its optimum efficiency level, especially with the current price of energy. So Pali have put together its list of top tips on how to make your boiler more energy efficient.

First of all you should arrange to routine boiler service because it is always cheaper and more convenient to have a service undertaken rather then battling with a broken boiler and it ends up being an emergency. A service will ensure that the boiler runs efficiently and safely therefore you will save money on your energy bills and keep your family warm and safe.

A service usually lasts around an hour and will begin with a heating engineer carrying out a visual check of the boiler to make sure it meets the current electrical, building and gas safety regulations. The next thing that’s involved in a boiler service is a check of the controls and operations to make sure the nine components work correctly including the main burner, fan and flue terminal. The engineer will then remove and clean the casing of the boiler making sure all dirt is removed and once finished, he will test the efficiency of the flue combustion gasses and gas tightness to make sure there are no leaks of carbon monoxide, the silent killer.

A service for a standard efficiency boiler typically costs around £50 to £80 however for a high efficiency condensing boiler you will look at paying £80 to £160 for a service. If your boiler was fitted after 2005 and it’s a condensing boiler you will pay around £90 + VAT for a service.

The second Top Tip from Pali to make your boiler more energy efficient is to have an engineer carry out a powerflush. A powerflush is recommended every five years to make sure the water is circulating properly around your heating system. For an average three bedroom property with between 8 to 12 radiators it may cost anywhere between £275 to £650 for a powerflush depending on the engineer.

When a powerflush takes place, a pump is connected into your heating system along with a flow reverser device to catch the water and sludge crust breaker fluid once it’s been pumped through the system. Once this process has taken place, a descaler is then pumped through the system to break down any build up of limescale and then clear water is pumped through the system to remove the contaminated water. The service is completed when a corrosion inhibitor is pushed through the pump to each radiator in the home to prevent any further build up of debris such as sludge and rust blocking the system.

Pali’s third Top Tip is for the people who have a traditional conventional boiler because you can fit a thermostat to your hot water tank along with an insulation jacket which can make your boiler more energy efficient. The good news is you don’t need to hire an engineer to do this! You can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by a massive 130kg a year and save £30 just by fitting a thermostat if you live in a typical three bedroom home.

You fit the thermostat to the water tank, making sure the temperature sensor makes contact with the cylinder inside then you can set the maximum temperate to 60 DC to keep your boiler cost effective. If you fit an insulation jacket to your boiler you will be reducing the heat loss up to 75% which can save you £40 a year! The insulation jacket will keep the water in your boiler hotter for longer therefore less re-heating is needed and the good news is it only costs around £15 to purchase an insulation jacket!
