{"id":1185,"date":"2017-05-25T15:33:08","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T15:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paliltd.com\/news\/?p=1185"},"modified":"2017-05-25T15:33:08","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T15:33:08","slug":"wigan-pier-buildings-transformed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paliltd.com\/news\/wigan-pier-buildings-transformed\/","title":{"rendered":"Wigan Pier Buildings To Be Transformed!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1187 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paliltd.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wigan-pier-buildings.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paliltd.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wigan-pier-buildings.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.paliltd.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wigan-pier-buildings-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The transformation of three buildings in the historic Wigan Pier Quarter, is set to happen in the near future.\u00a0 Wigan Council has launched a development contest with a six week invitation to tender for bids to develop the three buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The three former industrial buildings up for development are <strong>The Warehouse<\/strong> a 23,200sq ft three-storey warehouse built in 1790, <strong>The Orwell<\/strong>, formerly Gibson\u2019s Warehouse, an 8,000sqft warehouse constructed in 1777 and <strong>The Education Centre<\/strong>, which was once used to support education opportunities, and has an area of 4,500sq ft.<\/p>\n<p>There has already been significant interest in the buildings from developers, with a mix of ideas being but forward including new office space and leisure and social destinations.<\/p>\n<p>The tender process will run for six weeks and is being overseen by Wigan Council in partnership with commercial agents Lamberts Smith Hampton and the Canal &amp; River Trust.\u00a0 At the end of the tender period all applications will be reviewed and a preferred partner or partners will be selected.<\/p>\n<p>The Wigan Pier Quarter has recently seen the development of the Pier Conference Centre and Performance venue, and also approved planning permission for a social, arts and cafe venue.\u00a0 To support these regeneration opportunities the council has invested in new car parking facilities, created a community garden, and hosted a major business event to showcase the Pier Quarter and its opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Wigan Pier was formally a coal loading jetty where wagons would unload their coal on to canal barges, and this year marks the 80<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the publication of George Orwell\u2019s \u2018The Road to Wigan Pier\u2019 which helped make the pier famous!<\/p>\n<p>Further information on the tender process can be obtained by contacting Lambert Smith Hampton on 0161 228 6411.
