Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council has announced that Leigh will receive \u00a34m for regeneration projects in the area. The money will come from the 2017\/18 budget and Lord Smith has said that the public will be asked for ideas on how the money should be spent. In a statement, Lord Peter Smith said \u201cWe often hear Leigh residents saying that the council never listens to them.\u00a0 Well we are listening and we do care about Leigh, which is why I wanted to secure this funding to help improve the area.\u00a0 As a Leigh resident myself I understand how important our town is and I want to ensure it stays that way.\u00a0 But rather than us telling you how we\u2019re going to spend the money we want you to tell us.\u00a0 We want to listen and we will\u201d.<\/p>\n
Initial ideas include changes to Leigh Town Hall, improvements to public spaces and local parks which will help residents to get active, but ultimately residents will have a say in where the money is invested.<\/p>\n
Currently there are major improvements ongoing in Leigh Town Centre, with \u00a3900k being invested in the regeneration of Bradshawgate and the outdoor market.\u00a0 The council has also invested a further \u00a31.5million to improve the soccer pitches at Leigh Sports Village, with \u00a3775,000 being spent on refurbishing the gym.\u00a0 The Leigh Carnival has also received a \u00a35,000 contribution.<\/p>\n
Details on how to submit ideas will be announced in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
